Bringing Dashboards to Life on an Intranet
The brief
- One of our clients, a major medical devices group, asked us to build them an intranet site to help improve communication and collaboration across a group of 72 countries in EMEA.
- An important element of the site was the dashboards – the client wanted people to be aware of their business performance relative to other countries in the region.
- The client wanted something creative – he did not want traffic lights or speedometer dials which he felt were tired and overused on intranets.
The exectution
- Working with the client, we brainstormed an approach that would add some fun to the dashboards – we felt that weather forecast maps would fit the brief well.
- Having worked on many dashboards in the past, we knew and understood that one of the main challenges with dashboards is keeping them up to date. We therefore developed an XML driven flash dashboard that allowed the data to be uploaded in text format.
The result
- See for yourself – the image above is a working version of the dashboards. We’ve used dummy data for this example.
- Although the site has not been live for long, one of the main benefits of the dashboards is that they are fun, easy to understand and allow the user to get an at-a-glance picture of sales performance.
- At the same time, the XML driven flash means that they can be updated quickly and easily with the latest business data by a non-technical person who does not need to know how to create and edit flash files.
