Bringing dashboards to life on an intranet
Communicating with style
Objective and brief
- An existing client, a major medical devices group, had already asked us to build an intranet site to help improve communication and collaboration across a group of 72 countries throughout EMEA.
- Management wanted staff to be more aware of their business performance relative to other countries in the region.
- They wanted to have a dashboard – but something creative - no traffic lights or speedometer dials!
How objectives were met
- Working with the client, we brainstormed an approach that would add some fun to the dashboards. We felt that weather forecast maps would fit the brief well.
- Having worked on many dashboards in the past, we knew and understood that one of the main challenges is keeping them up to date – therefore, data entry had to be quick and simple.
- We developed an XML-driven Flash dashboard that allowed the data to be easily updated in text format, but that was displayed as weather symbols over a map of the countries in the region.

Key challenges
- How to create a visually interesting dashboard that can be updated quickly and easily by a non-technical person
- Finding an engaging way to display many lines of sales data
Results
- One of the main benefits of the new dashboards is that they are fun, easy to understand and give users meaningful information on regional sales performance.
- At the same time, the XML-driven Flash means that they can be updated quickly and easily with the latest business data by a non-technical person, who does not need to know how to create and edit Flash files.
